What this site is about: Given the difficulty that I
personally had in accessing information in the Spanish archives as I was
tracing my own lineage back to Pre Inquisition Spain, I decided to compile all
the available archival information and established this site to help those
wanting to research their own Ancestry through the Archives in Spain.
You will be able to
find the main archives in the country and a synopsis of their content You
will find the Church archives as well as
the Diocese that each Archdiocese covers and University Libraries. In essence,
most of the reference material that is available in Spain is listed on this
website.
With the phone
numbers, e mail addresses and website addresses listed, it will be easy to
contact the specific archive and request more information.
It is important to
understand that the pace in Spain is different from other countries and many
archives close for holiday weeks and summer months. Summer hours should also be
taken into consideration. Your research trip will be much more successful if a

estuve en búsqueda de mi propio linaje decidí recopilar en un solo lugar toda
la información pertinente a los archivos en España.
Este sitio fue establecido para ayudar a las personas que desean buscar
sus ancestros utilizando las fuentes existentes y los archivos en España.
Aquí van a poder encontrar información sobre los archivos mas un
pequeño detalle de su contenido. También contiene listas de los archivos de las
Iglesias así como de las Universidades, Bibliotecas y en fin, casi todo el
material referencial disponible en España.

Es importante entender que en
España , muchas veces cierran el Verán entero o mantienen horarios especiales
en los días festivos. El horario en el Verano es reducido y tendrán mucho mas éxito si hacen la tarea

The Inquisition Archives are many and scattered all
over the world. In
this Listing are only the Major ones available.
Los expedientes de la Inquisición
son muchos y están en todas partes del mundo. Este List ado

Spanish tribunals: To locate records of the Spanish
Inquisition, one must determine which tribunal or Court was governing the
location where your family lived at the time. Even with that said, many people
were caught and tried in other villages and were never brought back to the
tribunal that was responsible. Initially, the Tribunals would set up and move
around from place to place but later, buildings were erected and permanent
locations were established.
Tribunales españoles: Para
poder buscar información en los archivos de la Inquisición que están
disponibles, hay que primero determinar cual fue la Corte o Tribunal que juzgó
el familiar que está buscando. Normalmente es el tribunal que estaba mas cerca
al pueblo o a la casa de la persona pero muchas veces las personas estaban en
otro pueblo vendiendo sus bienes por ejemplo, y lo juzgaban en un pueblo lejano
y nuna lo devolvían a su correspondiente tribunal. Inicialmente, los Tribunales
se movian de pueblo a pueblo y finalmente hicieron edificios para los locales
permanentes de los Tribunales.
University Archives
While there are many locations in Spain that are dedicated to archival
material such as Museums and Churches, the archives of the Universities should
not be overlooked. Many times, historical documents were given over or housed
by Universities that have existed since the middle ages. The University archive
listing is in alphabetical order by city.
Aun cuando hay muchas localidades
en España que tienen sus propios archivos como los Museos y las Iglesias, los
